Titles (course, module, slide, job aid etc.)

See the following rules regarding course, module, slide and other titles.

Course titles

For course titles, use title case.

This means you should capitalize the first word, the last word, the first word after a colon and all:

  • nouns (Operation Desert Storm)

  • adjectives (International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent)

  • verbs (Campaign to Stop Killer Robots)

but do not capitalize

  • articles (a, an, the)

  • possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her, our, their)

  • prepositions (by, concerning, in on, to, with, etc.)

  • coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet)

Please always capitalize first or last word no matter what part of speech. Click here[1] for examples.

Please use your judgement to decide whether to capitalize the other parts of speech, such as:

  • adverbs (Towards a Mentally Flourishing Scotland)

  • pronouns (Help Them Shine)

Modules, slides, job aids and other titles

For module, slide, job aid and all other titles, use roman (sentence case).

This means you should simply capitalize the first word of the title and the first word after a colon in a title.

Punctuation marks in titles

Titles never end with a full stop but may end with a question mark.

Wh-questions as titles

If you have a title that says, “How/When/Where to_____”, there should be no punctuation. Do not put a question mark unless the title is a question that contains both a subject and a verb.

Titles consistency

Make sure that module, section, slide and activity titles are phrased consistently. Please see the section on “Consistency” for some tips.
