Questions, response options and feedback

Questions in learning activities and assessments:

  • should be clear and concise

  • may include an intro paragraph for context to help the reader make a decision

  • should never be formulated in a negative way (e.g. “which of the following is NOT...”) because this may confuse the learner.

Response options for multiple-choice questions should:

  • be clear and concise

  • start with a capital letter, unless they are completing a phrase

  • include a full stop if the option is a full sentence

  • not include a full stop if the option is a single word or sentence fragment

  • all be of similar length and grammatical structure to make it difficult for learners to distinguish between the correct answers and distractors.

Feedback for learning activities and assessments:

Where possible, it is better to use real-life consequences to show the learner the results of on-the-job decisions. However, there are circumstances where simply stating “Correct” and “Incorrect” may be useful or necessary. In those cases, the slide should have a header that says “Correct” or “Incorrect” without a full stop after the word.
