Purpose

Use transcripts to:

  • add inclusiveness, especially for the hearing-impaired

  • help in case of connectivity issues, e.g. video or audio file not loading

  • increase knowledge retention – it’s easier to remember the content of a video when you also read it

  • make the translation process easier.

The process of doing transcripts can vary based on:

  • WHY you are making a transcript these rules apply to multimedia with spoken language and to scripts based on which the recordings will be created. Transcripts may be intended for external or internal communication, internal use only (a closed group of people) or specific events (e.g. a course, Red Pulse post, etc.).

  • WHO you are making transcripts for – the complexity of the transcript will vary based on your target audience and their needs.

  • HOW a transcript is displayed/embedded – the transcript can be embedded below or next to the video/audio as well as follow the speakers as they talk. Or it can be in a separate document (Word, PDF) which can be used offline or posted on Intranet (e.g. Red Pulse, Communities etc.).

Note

It’s good to bear in mind that the quality of the spoken language in a video/audio (strong accent, pace, etc.) as well as the quality of the video/audio sound can influence the duration of the process.
